National Institute of Neurosciences & Hospital (NINS&H) started its journey from September 2012 under the leadership of legendary professor of Neurology of Bangladesh, Prof. (Dr.) Quazi Deen Mohammad, and the founding Director of NINS. It is situated in the health hub of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka. This is the only Govt. run tertiary care neuroscience center in Bangladesh. Five hundred (500) bedded 10 storied hospital having department of Neurology, Neurosurgery, Pediatric Neurology, Pediatric Neurosurgery, Neurophysiology, Neurointervention, Neurorehabilitation, Neuroradiology, Neuropathology, Transfusion Medicine, Critical Care Medicine & so others. Our Operation Theatre, Cath Lab, Laboratory Services, Neuroradiology, Neurophysiology, ICU & HDU are equipped with all modern & sophisticated technologies. We are having specialized outpatient service & 24×7 emergency service. Within next 6 months, expansion of NINS for another 500 bed is going to start. So, this institute will be 1000 bedded largest neuroscience centre in Asia.
About Movement Disorder Unit:
Movement Disorder Unit, National Institute of Neurosciences & Hospital was inaugurated under the department of Clinical Neurology leaded by the dynamic Chief Coordinator Prof. (Dr.) Mohammad Shah Jahirul Hoque Chowdhury in October 2014 with OPD basis by opening Movement Disorder Clinic & Botulinum Neurotoxin (BoNT) Clinic. Since then, this unit has been serving a lot of patients with Parkinson’s Disease and other movement disorders like tremor, Choreoathetosis, Myoclonus, Ballism, Dystonia etc. and giving Botulinum Neurotoxin (BoNT) to many patients with focal dystonia like Blepharospasm, Hemifacial Spasm, Miege Syndrome, Orofacial Dystonia, Cervical Dystonia and Writer’s cramp etc.In 2017, we started Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) Surgery with the help of Prof. Tipu Zahed Aziz, a renowned functional neurosurgeon from Oxford University, UK.
In 2024, we started subcutaneous injection of apomorphine in advanced Parkinson’s Disease patients in our movement disorder unit.
We have movement disorder fellows trained with managing Parkinson’s Disease and other movement disorders including selection, planning and programming of DBS surgery patients. We also have a skilled functional neurosurgeon trained in deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery from Oxford University. We get support from our Neuropsychiatry and Neurorehabilitation specialist in managing psychiatric and physiatric problems of our patients.
We are going to start fellowship in movement disorder for local and international neurology students or residents for a duration of 6 months to 1 year to be commenced from January or July session from the upcoming year 2025
